The organization and facilitation of country visits should involve United Nations country teams for better cohesion and effectiveness of work during and after the visits.

9. The authorities made genuine efforts to make the visit of the Working Group a success.

The Chinese authorities having agreed in principle to such a visit, the Working Group started conveying to the authorities its expectations as to the modalities of the visit and the possible detention facilities that the Group might wish to visit.

In Casablanca it met non governmental organizations concerned with the relief and rehabilitation of street children and visited a centre for girls.

The mission is of the opinion that there is an urgent need to establish appropriate arrangements for international electoral observation.

In the course of its visit to Belarus from 16 to 26 August 2004, the Working Group requested to visit him, but its request was denied.

In view of the Working Group apos s projected visit to China in 1997 and the fact that consultations with the Chinese authorities to finalize the modalities of the visit are at an advanced stage, the Working Group believes, pending formal confirmation of the projected visit by the Chinese authorities before the end of the fifty third session of the Commission, that it would be appropriate to defer all deliberations regarding communications received by the Working Group.

In presenting the report of the field visit to Azerbaijan (DP 2005 CRP.8 DP FPA 2005 CRP.2), the rapporteur, on behalf of the joint mission, expressed gratitude to the Government and the country team for their hospitality and hard work in preparing the field visit.

In response to this request, the Working Group decided, in 1998 (see E CN.4 1999 63, paragraph 36), to address a follow up letter to the Governments of the countries it visited, together with a copy of the relevant recommendations adopted by the Group contained in the reports on its country visits.

One participant suggested that United Nations country teams and OHCHR could hold local meetings, presenting the mission reports and recommendations so as to increase awareness of and follow up to missions.

The Working Group reiterates its belief that its country visits are particularly useful in fulfilling its mandate.
