(i) Classification of jobs and specializations

In early 2005, a proposal by the FAO for the International Standard Classification of Occupations was submitted to the ILO Bureau of Statistics, suggesting some specific recommendations to improve the classification of occupations in the areas of agriculture, forestry and fisheries in ISCO 88.

Classification of jobs and specializations is the basic instrument of employment, vocational guidance and placement policy.

While horizontal segregation prevents women from entering traditional male occupations , vertical segregation impacts on women's career development opportunities preventing them from reaching managerial positions.

At its meeting in June 2005, the Expert Group on International Economic and Social Classifications took note of the mandate and process to update the International Standard Classification of Occupations 1988 (ISCO 88),2 including the establishment of an ISCO web forum and the sending of methodological questionnaires to member countries.

The residual 1 per cent refers to cases brought by groups of two or more staff members.

C. Status of the revision process of the International Standard Classification of Occupations

Occupational qualification categories were determined by the Cabinet of Ministers.

Figure III presents the breakdown of cases by occupational category.

Work on updating the International Standard Classification of Occupations (ISCO 88) started in January of 2004, as mandated by the seventeenth International Conference of Labour Statisticians in November 2003.

On the other hand, very few women can be found in the ISCO categories Craft and related trades workers' and Plant and machine operators and assemblers'.

The Advisory Committee further notes that a staff turnover factor of 5 per cent and 1.5 per cent has been applied to continuing posts in the Professional and General Service staff categories respectively a delayed recruitment factor of 50 per cent and 35 per cent has been applied for new posts in the Professional and General Service categories respectively in the costing exercise.

(ii) Poverty and socio occupational category

57. As indicated in section I of this report, women remain concentrated at the lower levels of the Professional category, with the majority of women at the P 3 level.

Similar principles also underlie the Professional Training and Unemployment Fund and the Medicare Fund.
