But to me, what's shocking is not just the amount of light, but the fact that it's not just luciferin and luciferase.

That's how people make GloFish.

The first is the optical sensor, which reacts to the behaviour of light passing through the test solution, recording such phenomena as the absorption or fluorescence of light, light scattering or spectrophotometry.

You take a glow gene out of a coral or a jellyfish and you stick it in a zebrafish, and, puff, they glow.

A lot of them can release their luciferin or luferase in the water just the way a squid or an octopus will release an ink cloud.

We take that tissue, we purify the RNA out of it using some basic technology, and then we put a florescent tag on it.

And we can make those markers glow.

The bioluminescence they use the lights for attracting mates and attracting prey and communicating.

And of course, we had the metal halide lamps and fluorescent lamps and things like that.
