It seems that opiates and non opiate sedatives are the two major types of drugs abused in the region, followed by cannabis and cocaine.

A. Trends in the volume of drug trafficking 1. Opiates

In section A of chapter I global developments are summarized by type of drug, that is, opiates, cocaine, cannabis and psychotropic and controlled precursor substances.

8. Opiate type drugs were the second most frequently reported drugs of abuse, with 69 countries reporting 1.2 million abusers.

Map 3shows the distribution of countries reporting injecting drug use and indicates those countries reporting HIV infection among IDUs.

50. A universal trend on the reporting of psychotropic substances is difficult to identify, as the different groups of substances showed different developments.

At the same time, the increasing availability and abuse of synthetic drugs such as amphetamine type stimulants was a cause of concern, particularly in view of their prevalence among young people.

In many regions, data on demand for drug abuse treatment are the main type of data that are routinely available on drug abuse.

Moreover, India has large scale licit production of psychotropic substances which are exported, licitly and illicitly, to other countries of the subregion, where the substances are widely abused.

Such data exclude those drug abusers who are not reported by treatment facilities, those who are admitted to facilities but do not participate in the reporting system, those not admitted to any treatment facility and those who have not yet experienced drug abuse problems.

In addition to the different stages of illicit drug use, illicit demand can be significantly influenced by the drug type, its characteristics and effects.

Such measures should contribute to a more efficient monitoring of the licit movement of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances throughout the world.
