Reducing individual tax rates and taxes on savings and investment at best fosters modest increases in employment, work effort, and income. Despite the Bush era tax cuts, the 2001 2007 expansion was the worst of the post war period in terms of investment, employment, wage, and GDP growth.

When governments think about the difficult task of raising taxes, they usually think about income tax, business taxes, and value added tax (VAT). But there are other taxes that can raise significant amounts of revenue with a much less negative impact on the economy.

Recently, there has been significant growth of involvement of the private sector in the space business.

Firms which have diversified vertically tend to be the largest in terms of their turnover, but are among the less profitable and achieve the lowest rates of growth. The best growth performance is achieved by firms diversifying into related areas, while diversification into unrelated areas yields the highest profits but slow growth.

Nutrition for Growth

In sub Saharan Africa, where population growth has surpassed increases in agricultural productivity, food availability per capita has dropped, leading to rises in malnutrition and hunger.

The percentage of self employed females has risen from 11.7 in 1997 98 to 15.72 in the same period after touching 16.7 in 1999 2000.

On one hand, the authorities have ordered thousands of companies to reduce capacity. On the other hand, the government has introduced some mini stimulus measures, ranging from exemptions for micro firms from business and sales taxes to pressure on banks to increase loans to exporters.

This translates, from the year 2006, to an average annual growth of 4 percent in gross proceeds and net operating income.

But private firms are significantly more labor intensive than SOEs which use almost four times as much capital and thus have been responsible for most of China s job creation in recent decades.
