Regional initiatives are under way in Mexico and in Central America, francophone West Africa, Southern Africa, Central and Eastern Europe, and South and South East Asia.

UNODC also collaborates with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and is running three subregional drug demand reduction expert networks in Eastern, Northern and Western Africa.

The plan of action stresses the role of the regional economic communities such as ECOWAS in west Africa and SADC in southern Africa.

The focus will be on priority countries in Africa, south east and south west Asia, South America, and the Middle East.

Of these, 40 are in sub Saharan Africa, 4 in North Africa, 11 in Latin America, 6 in the Caribbean, 5 in West Asia, 5 in East Asia, 8 in South east Asia and Oceania, and 5 in South Asia.

1. The zone of peace and cooperation of the South Atlantic represents a valuable framework for cooperation and development for the South Atlantic countries of Africa and South America.

47. The UNCTAD secretariat has been cooperating closely with African regional organizations such as the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), OAU and AEC as well page 9 as with African subregional organizations such as SADC, ECOWAS and COMESA.

9. Recalls in this regard the positive experience of the regional and subregional presence in southern, central, eastern and western Africa

Many of these programmes are being implemented within the framework of subregional institutions such as SATCC in Southern Africa, ECOWAS, UDEAC in West Central Africa, the Northern Transit Transport Corridor Authority in East Central Africa, MERCOSUR in Latin America and ECO in Asia.

Namibia is situated in the south west corner of Africa, bordered in the west by the Atlantic Ocean, in the east by Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe, in the south by South Africa and in the north by Angola.

During the SW, Western Europe and North America emerged as the major host regions, accounting respectively for 34 per cent and 24 per cent of Indian OFDI equity.

The Council will have to work in close cooperation with South Africa, the African Union and the Economic Community of West African States.

Central Asia, South West Asia, North Africa and the Middle East were reviewed in January Europe and former Yugoslavia in April May Africa in June and the Americas, and Asia and the Pacific in September.

The number of members has increased in Europe (Iceland, Denmark, Spain) Asia (Singapore, Malaysia) South America (Argentina) and Africa (Guinea).

By the third IBSA Ministerial Meeting (Cape Town, South Africa, March 2005), preferential trade agreements had been concluded between Mercosur and the Southern African Customs Union (SACU) and between Mercosur and India.

Central Asia, South West Asia, North Africa and the Middle East were reviewed in February Europe and former Yugoslavia in April Africa in June and the Americas and Asia and the Pacific in September.

For example, the USGS has begun studying the Sahara in North Africa, the southern part of Africa, Asia, and the Southwestern United States using images from the SRL.

Slight increases have been observed in Central, South and South West Asia, while the coverage has remained stable in East and South East Asia, Europe and Latin America and the Caribbean and has dropped in Sub Saharan Africa (see figure V).

The other group has a network of people that operates in an area that includes eastern and south eastern Asia, Southern Africa, the eastern coast of Africa and the Horn of Africa.

In support of NEPAD's trade objectives, ECA conducted four subregional expert group meetings to enhance negotiation capacity of member States in CEMAC (Economic and Monetary Community in Central Africa) (December 2004), Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) (March 2005), Common Market of Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) (March 2005) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) (April 2005).
