A. Update on Regional Developments in Central, East and West Africa

Regional initiatives are under way in Mexico and in Central America, francophone West Africa, Southern Africa, Central and Eastern Europe, and South and South East Asia.

A. CASWANAME regional developments

However, large numbers of people had recently been uprooted in the Great Lakes region, the Caucasus, West Africa, Iraq and other parts of Asia and Africa.

With the establishment of ECOWAS, the Franc Zone countries created two sub regional groupings, WAEMU and CEMAC, in a bid to curb British, American, and Nigerian influence. As a result, West African countries are mostly missing out on Africa s current revival and the prospect of a prolonged period of stagnation in the eurozone certainly won t help.

The peace and security of the whole of North West Africa were at stake.

The President of Togo, Mr. Eyadéma, was making great efforts in respect of conflict prevention and the peaceful settlement of disputes in the West African sub region and in other parts of Africa.

The areas most affected by pirates and armed robbers continued to be the same areas, i.e., the South China Sea, Strait of Malacca, Indian Ocean, East and West Africa and South America.

There is the modern sector, there is the informal sector and the traditional sector.

A joint initiative, known as Integrated strategies for sensitive border areas in West Africa , headed by UNOWA and the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, including concerned United Nations country teams and peace missions, ECOWAS, development partners and civil society groups in the region, was launched in October 2004 to address problems of West African border areas.

In many cases, such as that of West Africa, conflict in one country contributes to overall instability in the region, requiring regional approaches to the protection of civilians.

I am pleased to note the growth of a constructive partnership among the United Nations system, development partners and ECOWAS, as well as some of the Governments, civil society organizations and local communities in the West African region.

Under this agenda item, three regional reviews of Africa were presented to the Standing Committee an Update on Regional Developments in Central, East and West Africa (EC 48 SC CRP.24) an Update on Developments in the Great Lakes Region of Africa (EC 48 SC CRP.25) and an Update on Developments in the Southern African Region (EC 48 SC CRP.23).

The West African subregion, through its regional organization the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) promptly deployed a peacekeeping force with the full political backing of the African Union.

The countries formed on the territory of the former USSR face the novel problem of transiting illegal migrants from the countries of South West Asia, Africa and the Middle and Near East who, taking advantage of the liberalization of the region apos s border regimes, are trying to reach the countries of Western Europe.
