With respect to trade, the forthcoming World Trade Organization Ministerial Meeting provides an important opportunity for significant decisions to be taken to reform the world trading system so as to provide better opportunities for trade to contribute to Africa's long term growth and development.

Through efforts from our Headquarters office in New York and through the work of our members worldwide, the WTCA works toward establishing peace and stability through trade.

Intra African trade is only about 11 per cent of total trade, the lowest among world regions however, it has doubled since 1980.

It will provide a forum for policy discussion and consensus building on core and emerging issues of international trade, commodities, trade in services and new and dynamic sectors of international trade.

Owing to primary sector domination, intraregional trade accounts for only 7 8 per cent of total ESCWA trade, although countries differ considerably in their reliance on trade among the ESCWA member countries.

The forthcoming WTO Ministerial Conference should deal with export subsidies, enhanced market access and the removal of technical trade barriers, for trade was the key to sustained economic growth and development.

In such economies, that pattern not only typically depended on leverage it also enlarged the non tradable side of the economy and shrank the tradable side. And yet, given that the non tradable sector is constrained by its reliance on domestic demand, recovery if it comes will depend on the tradable sector s growth potential.

In addition, sharp trade restrictions, including for intraregional trade, are hindering agricultural and manufacturing exports of developing countries on all continents.

However, thus far, developing countries' participation in and profits from world trade have not been considerable, because of the obstacles and distortions in trade, such as subsidies and internal assistance, that stands in the way of the development of our countries.
