These rapid changes have rattled global financial markets and spooked investors, reducing their appetite for risk a cautious attitude that has been reflected in emerging markets. Investors have sat on the sidelines, and the MSCI index that tracks returns on emerging market equities has stagnated.

Their operations can be quite specific in that they invest abroad to produce for export markets or to produce for their large customers locally.

Of the more than 20 stock markets in Africa, most are undercapitalized they account for some 7 per cent of the capitalization of emerging stock markets and list no more than a handful of companies.

In the asset management industry, there have traditionally been two types of investment strategies passive and active. The passive approach includes investment in indices that track specific benchmarks, say, the S P 500 for the United States or an index of advanced economies or emerging market equities.

In light of the importance of market size to potential foreign investors, it also seems likely that such arrangements could help attract FDI to Africa.
