The interventions build on commodities and the related secondary agro processing industries with emphasis on food (e.g. fish, meat, dairy, vegetable oils) and non food (wood and non wood forest products, textiles and garments, leather and skins) products.

Certification of origin of timber and timber products, chain of custody systems and voluntary codes of conduct are important tools in combating illegal practices in forestry.

Indeed, wood production in some areas could be significantly increased. Wood products harvested from sustainably managed forests can make a significant contribution to sustainable development and countries should promote and encourage the use of wood products rather than non renewable products.

Where forests play a critical role in enabling people to cope with poverty, their rights should be safeguarded by providing and securing tenure and access to wood and non timber forest products.

In some countries, illegal logging is said to constitute around three quarters of total timber production.

The region's greatest potential lies in the agro industry sector with the food, leather, textile and wood sectors having been identified by NEPAD and APCI as the priority subsectors.

So we plant it later, along the waterways to filter the water, provide the raw products just in time for when the timber becomes available.

Many countries have well established forest inventory systems that are being further developed to collect a wider range of data that relate not only to trees and wood production but also to ecological condition, biological diversity, tree health, fires, and use for recreation and non timber forest products.
