In some developing countries, there has been a rapid transformation of the distribution sector in recent years, and in some cases these activities are already displaying features similar to those of developed market economies.

At its 45th plenary meeting, on 23 July 1996, the Economic and Social Council took note of the report of the Secretary General on the implementation of the United Nations System wide Action Plan on Drug Abuse Control.

The representative of the African Union (AU) stated that the AU fully supported the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples and the exercise to the right of self determination and independence by the populations of the remaining Non Self Governing Territories.

Employment in the distribution sector accounts for a sizeable share of non agricultural employment in developing countries, and it is significantly higher than in developed countries.

In addition, the independent expert was briefed about the status of the peace process and the six protocols that had been signed at that time, including on wealth sharing, power sharing and security arrangements.
