Significantly, Andrew Haldane, Executive Director for Financial Stability at the Bank of England, wrote the introduction.

In this sense, the term alchemy could be applied to pre Keynesians like US Treasury Secretary Andrew Mellon, whose prescription at the start of the Great Depression was to liquidate labor, liquidate stocks, liquidate farmers, liquidate real estate in order to purge the rottenness out of the system. It could also be applied to those today who favor returning monetary policy to the pre 1914 gold standard.

Computers are learning to diagnose diseases. In a recent book, the economists Erik Brynjolfsson and Andrew McAfee describe these recent advances as examples of the beginning of what they call the second machine age.

By contrast, the MIT scholars Erik Brynjolfsson and Andrew McAfee argue that the Second Machine Age is yet to come. They claim that ever increasing computing power, worldwide connectivity, and the almost unlimited potential for generating new innovations through recombining existing processes will trigger major transformations in both production and consumption, in the same way that the steam engine transformed the world in the nineteenth century.

Almost from her first appearance in the public eye, Michelle Obama has used clothing, etiquette, and such cues as where she shops and entertains to send out a subtle but radical message to American voters and to the world. For the first time since the days of Andrew Jackson, the White House is aggressively democratizing the highest office in the land, and symbolically inviting in the common man and now the common woman.

In addition, as the economists Erik Brynjolfsson and Andrew McAfee of MIT have argued in their book The Second Machine Age, rapid advances in information technology may enable increasingly extensive automation. Some manufacturing activities, though few jobs, may well return to developed countries, as the advantages of proximity to customers and lower transport costs outweigh decreasingly important differences in labor costs.
