Here, then, is an idea (part of A Modest Proposal for Resolving the Euro Crisis, co authored by Stuart Holland, and James K. Galbraith) aimed at re calibrating the rules, enhancing their spirit, and addressing the underlying economic problem.

If, at that time, the West had been prepared to settle for effectively containing Iran s nuclear program, rather than destroying every last sensitive component of it, a deal would have been possible. And, indeed, in early 2006, the International Crisis Group published a comprehensive delayed limited enrichment proposal that included all of the key features of the deal that has now been signed in Vienna.

NEW YORK In the 1987 film Wall Street, the character Gordon Gekko famously declared, Greed is good. His creed became the ethos of a decade of corporate and financial sector excesses that ended in the late 1980 s collapse of the junk bond market and the Savings Loan crisis.

In particular, central banks behavior during the crisis has called into question whether inflation targeting is an effective framework in the presence of systemic shocks, and, more broadly, whether it can be sustained throughout economic cycles. After all, a policy regime that sets aside its only goal during a crisis seems to lack the ability to cope with unexpected challenges.

It focuses, as policy oriented think tanks do, on analyzing complex conflicts and potential conflicts around the world and identifying workable solutions. It campaigns for the adoption of these solutions, but less at the grassroots and more by direct access to high level policymakers.
