Greece has seen the rise of an overtly fascist party, Golden Dawn, which proudly celebrates the legacy of former dictator Ioannis Metaxas. Although Golden Dawn has existed for roughly two decades, only in the last year did it gain enough support to enter parliament.

The center right New Democracy has also lost ground, though not as badly. But a new force has emerged on its flank Golden Dawn, a frankly neo Nazi party that is spreading violence on the streets and in public life, and seeing its popular support increase as a result.

As a result, Greece has suffered a slump worse than Germany s in the 1930 s. Is it really any wonder that popular support for the governing parties that complied with this diktat plunged from 69 in the 2009 European Parliament election to 31 in 2014, that a far left coalition demanding debt justice topped the poll, or that the neo Nazi Golden Dawn party finished third?

I will not dwell on Tsipras s parliamentary alliance with the conspiracy minded, right wing Independent Greeks, whose leaders do not shy away from diatribes against homosexuals, Buddhists, Jews, and Muslims. Nor will I dwell on the fact that Tsipras did not refrain, when assembling parliamentary support for his referendum, from soliciting the support of the neo Nazi Golden Dawn party, whose help any other European leader would have rejected.

A country cannot prosper if its educational system lacks the resources and capacity to prepare its children to thrive in the digital economy. Likewise, a reform program cannot be implemented if inequality, poverty, and social frustration strengthen extremist political parties, such as Greece's overtly fascist Golden Dawn party or France's far right, anti Europe National Front, which now boasts 25 electoral support.

Mass anti austerity protests are one warning sign. Another is growing popular support for neo Nazi movements like Golden Dawn, now the third largest political party in Greece.

In focusing on summit declarations and promises of far reaching reforms of EU institutions, investors are missing the real risk the collapse of public support for, or at least public acquiescence to, the austerity policies required to work down heavy debt burdens and for the governments pursuing these policies.
