The LUCF sector is a net GHG sink for the Africa region, the Asia and the Pacific region, and the Other region.

27. The Director of the Great Lakes region of Africa introduced the Update on Regional Developments in the Great Lakes Region of Africa (EC 48 SC CRP.25), updating delegations on new developments and the main concerns of UNHCR in the region.

But generally, the trends that start in Egypt have historically spread across the MENA region, the Middle East and North Africa region.

The specific case of conflicts in the Great Lakes region in Africa was highlighted.

Africa is undoubtedly the region most affected by the contrasts of the contemporary world.

Almost half those countries are in the poverty stricken sub Saharan region of Africa.

Africa is the only region where poverty is expected to continue to increase substantially.

The prevalence of violence against women in South Africa varies from region to region, between urban and rural and between black and white communities.

Africa remains a region of great concern, but other areas of the world lag behind, too.

That possibility justified the focus of international support on Africa, in particular the sub Saharan region.

In Africa, recent events in the Great Lakes region, especially in eastern Zaire, were deeply disturbing.

41. The situation in the Great Lakes region of Africa was a cause for particular concern.
