Mapping is, of course, not just about cartography, it's also about imagery.

Also, navigation information is widely used in geodesy, cartography, geology, forestry and agriculture.

The Council had a discussion on cartography (agenda item 13 (k)) at its 33rd meeting, on 20 July 2005 (see E 2005 SR.33).

The series would be designed to test and demonstrate new and advanced technologies and applications of space based remote sensing such as those for ocean resources monitoring and cartography.

RJGC conducts regular training programmes as well as a three year diploma course in surveying and cartography through its community college, which is being considered for upgrading to a university college in collaboration with the University of Jordan.

It is planned that the proposed university college will offer a five year programme of courses involving three years of general education and two years of specialized education in cartography, photogrammetry, geographic information systems (GIS) and remote sensing.

In conjunction with the launching of TPN 4 in Africa, OSS, with GTZ support, assisted in the installation of a cartographic server and the virtual library on the local server of the Organization for African Cartography and Remote Sensing (OACRS).

Jorge Luis Borges, the Argentine writer, once wrote a short story a single paragraph that is perhaps the best guide to the scientific method. In it, he described a distant land where cartography the science of making maps was taken to ridiculous extremes.

Today, people like Noé are spearheading a second golden age of cartography, which promises to bring equally significant economic and social benefits. Indeed, accurate maps break down geographic barriers, empowering individuals to reach their desired destinations, enabling businesses to reach consumers anywhere, and enriching people s outlooks.

(iii) Fellowships and grants fellowships, short term training, study tours and on the job training for national statisticians from developing countries and countries with economies in transition to upgrade and strengthen their knowledge and skills in the area of statistics and to develop regional and international networks as well as in the area of cartography.

During 2005, the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) made available on its website the major outcomes of a seminar held in December 2003 in Santiago on the lessons learned from the 2000 round of population and housing censuses in Latin America. Topics included census organization coverage cartography training and use of sampling new technologies data processing and characteristics of dwellings, households and persons.
