The response provided by the European region shows stable trends, but in reality the responses of Central and Eastern European countries differ from those of Western European countries.

Three reports on the study have been published to date in the UNU WIDER World Development Studies series (a) Emerging labour markets labour market developments and transitional unemployment in Central and Eastern European countries (b) Income policy in Central and Eastern Europe in the transition period and (c) Demographic development of the Central and Eastern European region .

Central and Eastern Europe is the main transit region.

In the European region, UNDCP has continued to work closely with the Pompidou Group in connection with future activities related to precursor control in central and eastern Europe.

This applies in particular to certain central and eastern European and CIS countries, Africa south of the Sahara and the Caribbean region, for which overviews are given below.

That holds true also for our Central European partners.

We do so through multilateral channels and through joint European and Asian initiatives. Overcoming the crisis is important, too, for political stability in the region. As regards Central and Eastern Europe, the Netherlands is heavily engaged in assisting countries of that region in their transition to market economy and democracy. Our involvement is a central feature in our relations with all candidates for accession to the European Union.

Central and Eastern Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States region

The other critical region in the continent has been Central Africa.

Several groups operated in the region of the Subcommission, including Colombian cartels, the Sicilian Mafia and associated groups, as well as the Russian Mafia and emerging central and eastern European organizations

European integration is vital for Kosovo and for the region.

Twenty one Eastern and Central European States participated in the conference.

Three such meetings have been held, in the Latin America and the Caribbean region, the Asia and Pacific region, and the European region.
