His daughter is proud of his legacy, which marked the beginning of South Korea s economic boom.

SINGAPORE To the extent that culture matters in politics, the recent spate of leadership changes in Northeast Asia suggests that Asian societies are more tolerant if not supportive of dynastic succession. South Korea s recently elected president, Park Geun hye, is the daughter of Park Chung Hee, who ruled the country from 1961 to 1979.

But to call the citizens under Park Chung Hee, Ferdinand Marcos, or General Suharto free is an abomination. The happy fact that Koreans, Filipinos, Thais and Taiwanese did eventually become free, or at least freer, is not so much to the credit of the US as it is to the people who fought for their freedoms themselves.

Her political style is both refreshing and relevant, because she comes across as sincere and forthright at a time when the public is hungry for moral leadership. And she has an astonishing talent for simplifying complicated issues accurately, which she likely learned along with how to interpret and manipulate the political connotations of every issue from her father, former President Park Chung hee.

Indeed, as a pillar of export oriented modernity, Park Chung hee was once lionized as the archetype of a modernizing political leadership in military authoritarian states. At home, he still ranks first in popularity among the country s heads of state, kindling nostalgia like a popular old record a corollary to people s frustration and anger at the current government of President Lee Myung bak.

The scandals surrounding the top aides to Lee nicknamed the Bulldozer from his career as a construction industry executive have complicated matters for the ruling Saenuri Party s candidate, Park Geun hye, and buoyed the hopes of her leftist rival, Moon Jae in of the Democratic United Party. Park is the daughter of former president, General Park Chung hee, who seized power in a military coup in 1961.

The Great Successor has had barely two years of on the job training, compared to the 14 years his father spent studying directly under Kim Il sung. Of course, Kim Jong il s sister, Kim Kyung hee, and his sister in law, Jang Seong taek, will assume something of a regency role, acting both as patron to the Great Successor and as a force to mobilize the military to close ranks behind the Kim dynasty.

But China is about to experience something new South Korea s soft power, personified by Park, who represents a center right coalition, but defies the usual political labels. Indeed, she was elected with a curious blend of support right wing backers of her father, Park Chung hee, who ruled the country with an iron fist from 1961 to 1979, and many other Koreans, including some on the left, who wanted someone different from the usual blue suited, white shirted Korean politician.
