The introduction of the teams continues to contribute to an increased emphasis on liaison, observation and mediation rather than the interposition of forces, for which UNFICYP still retains a capability.

This mode of application of the definition is to be commended precisely because it avoids treating the interposition of an armed conflict as having an automatic effect in relation to all the treaty relations of the States concerned.
