Prevention targeting children 5 15 years of age, high risk groups, pregnant and lactating mothers

There is no government scheme of provision of nutrition to all pregnant and lactating women.

WFP is working together with WHO and UNICEF on its project on supplementary feeding to pregnant and lactating mothers and children, which aims to reduce malnutrition among children under the age of five, pregnant and lactating women, to reduce low birth weight of children and to reduce anaemia among pregnant women.

(viii) Regular surveillance of ocular manifestations of vitamin A deficiency in vulnerable groups (children, pregnant and lactating mothers), especially in the estate sector and urban slums, will be ensured.

The crisis in Bahr Al Ghazal posed the greatest challenge, with some 45,000 children below five years of age and a similar number of pregnant and lactating women requiring supplementary or therapeutic feeding.

The Social Safety Net Program provides the poor with free health services at government health centers and hospitals and makes available supplementary food to children under five and pregnant lactating women in poor villages.

The Thriposha programme, a supplementary feeding programme of the Ministry of Health, was established with the support of CARE USAID with the objective of providing a nutritional supplement to the most nutritionally vulnerable segments of the population, namely, infants (6 12 months), pre school children, pregnant mothers and lactating mothers.
