North Korea s new boldness may reflect Kim Jong il s wish to polish the 26 year old Kim Jong un s image as a strong and decisive leader. Or, it may be that all of the provocations that have followed Kim Jong il s illness may be the work of Kim Jong un himself.

The author of the communication is Mr. Kim Jong Cheol, a Korean national.

Jang Song thaek had been seen as a kind of regent to Kim Jong un, the young successor to the Kim family dynasty, and was thought to be number two in the regime. But he owed his position to his wife, Kim Kyong hui, the only sister of Kim Jong il, Kim Jong un s deceased father.

The leadership change is occurring at the worst possible time. It is known that Chinese leaders had hoped that Kim Jong il would survive long enough to consolidate support among the country s various factions for the succession of his son, Kim Jong un.

Kim Jong il was said to have died suddenly of a heart attack, though he had been dying of cancer for some time a subterfuge aimed at concealing Kim Kyong hui s de facto leadership during her brother s cancer treatments. Moreover, before he died, Kim Jong il made a supreme effort to prepare the ground for his sister to continue as the key decision maker, even under Kim Jong un.

I have long believed that the true holder of power since Kim Jong il s death has been his sister, Kim Kyong hui, and no one else. North Korean culture would suggest that women do not take positions of leadership, but it appears that she was the only family member whom Kim Jong il could trust.

Some believe that North Korea has begun displaying its growing nuclear threat in order to secure the succession to power of Kim Jong un, Kim Jong il s rotund, twenty something youngest son. But, given how long this facility must have been under construction, this cannot possibly be the sole, or even the main, motivation.

Her sudden disappearance has sparked much speculation about the fragility of the Young General s regime despite her notorious drinking habits, she was widely seen as the power behind Kim Jong un s throne.

On September 25, the South Korean media reported rumors that Kim Kyong hui, the sister of the late Dear Leader, Kim Jong il and the aunt of North Korea s twenty something leader Kim Jong un was seriously ill. The reports have not been confirmed, but her name was missing from the list of attendees at a recent Supreme People s Assembly.

North Korea s bad luck is that, despite his incompetence, Kim Jong il seems to have managed to bequeath the dynasty he inherited to his youngest son, Kim Jong un. Given other North Korean institutions apparent indifference to the mess that the Kims have made of their country, there seems scant chance of any serious change of course being initiated from within.

Kim Jong il s demise reminds us that all people are equal before death. Havel s passing reminds us that the value of life will eventually gain respect.

The number of North Korean defectors to South Korea has fallen since Kim Jong un came to power seven years ago, a South Korean lawmaker has said.

North Koreans have suffered coercion for a long time, and although they are brainwashed to be docile and loyal to Kim s dynasty, you just cannot imagine how they will remain at the beck and call of Kim Jong un, who has no credentials, military or otherwise, to rule. Given its increasingly isolated international position in Asia, if North Korea s internal conflicts become acute, China may find it difficult to behave toward Kim Jong un with anything but cold and anxiety ridden indifference.

In conclusion, the representative noted the absolute trust of women in the social system and the benevolent politics initiated by the late President Kim Il Sung and carried forward by the country's leader, Kim Jong Il.

The idea was that isolation and sanctions would topple Kim Jong il s dictatorship. But the regime proved resistant, and the Bush administration finally agreed to enter into six party talks with China, Russia, Japan, and the two Koreas.

Where in the world can you find a more isolated, regimented and militarized dynastic mutation of a communist totalitarian system than in North Korea? Where on earth can you see a nuclear armed, missile shooting panhandler such as Kim Jong il?

The Chairman informed the Committee that informal consultations on this question would begin on that day, Tuesday, 20 December, following the adjournment of the formal meeting, in Conference Room 5 under the chairmanship of Mr. Yoo Dae jong (Republic of Korea).

Of course the North should continue to be named and shamed in the United Nations for its human rights abuses and nuclear misbehavior. But pariah states never behave responsibly, and no state has a bigger role than we do in coaxing Kim Jong un s regime into normality.

Kim Jong il is a naughty boy who wants attention and incentives to behave decently. Rather than debate with her counterparts, Clinton needs to ensure that other countries in the six party framework, especially China and South Korea, are on the same page as the US.
