According to the Pew Research Center, the number of Muslims in the world will nearly equal the number of Christians by 2070, and Islam will become the world s largest religion by 2100.

As for other parts of the world, a recent Pew poll found that many Europeans would like Europe to play a larger role, but to balance American military power would require a doubling or tripling of defense spending, and few Europeans are interested in such an increase. Nevertheless, a smart strategy for Europe will require greater investments in hard power.

A recent Pew Forum study found Europe s Muslims to be markedly less well off than the general population, frustrated with economic opportunities and socially isolated, while most American Muslims say that their communities are excellent or good places to live 71 say they can succeed in the US if they work. Both income and college graduation levels match the national norms.

But most experts believe that military force is off the table. The US public sharply rejected Obama s planned missile strikes to punish Assad for the repeated use of chemical weapons, and a recent Pew poll indicates that a majority of Americans believe that the US should mind its own business internationally and let other countries get along the best they can on their own.

LONDON In 2012, the Pew Research Center found that 85 of self described middle class adults in the United States believe that it is more difficult now than it was a decade ago for people like them to maintain their standard of living. The share of Americans who say that they are in the lower middle or lower class has risen from a quarter of the adult population in 2008 to around a third today.
