(ii) Stocktaking and dissemination of training methodologies developed by non governmental organizations and other sectors of the civil society

The NI Unit is preparing a compilation of declarations adopted by NHRIs since 1993 and a stocktaking of action taken.

The regional programme has demonstrated results in the area of thematic or sectoral stocktaking and analysis, advocacy and the fostering of dialogue.

However, our heads of State and Government have also requested a stocktaking of progress towards Security Council reform before the end of this year.

In the life of individuals as well as of institutions, the completion of 60 years is a significant moment for stocktaking certainly in my part of the world.

This publication contained the results of the global stocktaking exercise carried out in 2004 to assess the availability of official Information Society statistics in developing and transition economies.

Accordingly, the proposal will serve as a treatise on the contributions to human society of Earth observation systems, including a total stocktaking of Earth observation data and applications.

But I think we should pause, and pause now, to do a little stocktaking, to look into our own hearts and lives and see what we find there.

There remain a number of difficulties insofar as the storage and stocktaking of publications, which the Publications Board of the Office is duly studying with a view to taking appropriate measures.

These projects are designed to meet needs in the areas of natural resource stocktaking and management, environmental protection and town and country planning within the context of national and regional development programmes.

For each theme, the expert discussion focused on stocktaking, rationale, impact and effectiveness, possible improvements, and the role of national (home and host country) and international policy in light of identified best practices.

The United Nations Office at Nairobi is finalizing the annual inventory stocktaking which will update property records this will be used as a starting point for implementing a system to control the movement of property between offices.

The celebration of that anniversary will be a splendid extension of the High level Plenary Meeting of heads of State or Government, which was intended as an initial stocktaking of the implementation of the commitments undertaken in the Millennium Declaration.

It has at times served as the vanguard for other projects and programmes in the RCF, informing the design of regional programmes and also benefiting from stocktaking and analytical work undertaken by them there has been a healthy exchange of ideas between them.

Raising the profile of such issues and provoking a debate is therefore to be considered a major achievement in itself and requires a considerable effort stocktaking, advocacy and dissemination of knowledge is particularly urgent and necessary before one can expect extensive policy reforms and changes in approaches.

Following a global stocktaking exercise to examine the availability of official information society statistics and indicators in all countries, and through an extensive process of consultation and coordination at the regional level, a core list of ICT indicators that could be collected by all countries has been developed.

In providing feedback to the activities reported by the representative of the NCSP, the group noted that valuable country experiences from stocktaking exercises and the NCSP training workshops, such as documenting procedures for preparing inventories, will be useful if shared with other Parties not included in Annex I to the Convention (non Annex I Parties).

The RCF (2002 2005) was designed to cover three thematic pillars (governance, globalization and knowledge) and eight service areas or types of activities (a) stocktaking (b) knowledge sharing and dissemination (c) advocacy and fostering dialogue (d) policy advice (e) policy development (f) capacity building (g) implementation of pilot schemes and (h) the fostering of partnerships and networks.

Significantly, the secretariat had made substantive contributions to the WSIS process through participation in its stocktaking, in the UN ICT Task Force Global Forum on Internet Governance, in the WSIS PrepCom 1 and 2, and through the co organization of a donor agencies briefing and of two WSIS thematic meetings on The Social and Economic Implications of ICT and Measuring the Information Society .

My delegation considers that this draft resolution is not an objective, critical stocktaking, but instead reflects a partial and selective approach to the important matter it deals with, and makes little contribution to the promotion of the process of nuclear disarmament the international community apos s highest priority. My delegation will therefore abstain from the vote on draft resolution A C.1 52 L.32 Rev.1.
