The Economic and Social Council of the African Economic Community (AEC) was inaugurated in 1996 and the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the AEC held its first session in 1997.

26. Currently, the Programme on Promotion of Africa s Economic Cooperation and Integration through the establishment of AEC ( 2,151,322) has the objective of strengthening the regional economic communities and finalizing protocols as provided for in the treaty establishing AEC.

The findings of the mission were discussed at the second ministerial session of the Economic and Social Commission of AEC (Cairo, 23 and 24 April 1998) and areas where AEC would strengthen its cooperation with the regional economic communities were identified.

In addition to political issues, the meeting concentrated on the outcome of the first meeting of OAU and the African Economic Community (AEC) Ministers of Trade, in particular regarding Africa s position with respect to the implementation of the Uruguay Round agreements and the outcome of the second ordinary session of the Economic and Social Commission of AEC.

The candidates included four procurement professionals from ONUB, UNOCI, UNDOF and UNIFIL and eight procurement professionals from Headquarters.
