We would like to thank the co Chairmen of this period, Mr. Philip Burgess of Australia, Mr. Felipe Paolillo of Uruguay and Mr. Cristián Maquieira of Chile, for their valuable contribution to the work of the Consultative Process.

The President of the General Assembly reappointed Philip D. Burgess (Austrailia) for a third year as co chair and appointed Cristián Maquieira (Chile), following the appropriate consultations with Member States, to replace Felipe Paolillo (Uraguay), who was unable to continue as co chair.

On the basis of consultations with delegations and of an informal preparatory meeting held at United Nations Headquarters on 16 March 2005, the Co Chairpersons, Philip D. Burgess (Australia) and Felipe H. Paolillo (Uruguay), developed a format for the discussions at the sixth meeting of the Consultative Process (see annex I) and are proposing a provisional agenda for the meeting (see annex II).

The meeting was opened by the two Co Chairpersons, Cristián Maquieira (Chile) and Philip Burgess (Australia), who in their introductory statements outlined the programme of work of the sixth meeting and briefly reflected on the functions of the Consultative Process and the format for the discussions, in particular with regard to the discussions of the elements for consideration by the General Assembly.
