In accordance with the Syrian Penal Code of 1949, prostitution is illegal practising, engaging in or inciting prostitution is punishable under articles 509 to 516, found in section II, entitled Incitement to debauchery .

Article 201 further stipulates that Anyone who uses coercion, threats or deception to induce a male or female person to engage in debauchery or prostitution shall be liable to a penalty of up to five years apos imprisonment and or a fine of up to 5,000 rupees.

Article 200 of the Penal Code stipulates that Anyone who incites a male or female person to commit acts of debauchery or prostitution, or in any way assists therein, shall be liable to a penalty of up to one year apos s imprisonment and or a fine of up to 1,000 rupees.

Under article 8 of the Act, anyone who opens places of prostitution or debauchery or who in any way assists in the management of such places is punished with imprisonment for a period of not less than one year and not more than three years and a fine of not less than 1,000 and not more than 3,000 Syrian pounds.

The punishment further extends to include attempts to commit the offence article 1 of the Suppression of Prostitution Act No. 10 of 1961 provides that anyone who incites, employs, entices or lures a male or female person with intent to commit debauchery or prostitution shall be punished with imprisonment for a period of not less than one year and not more than three years and a fine of 1,000 to 3,000 Syrian pounds.

Also forbidden are married women unless they are captives (of war). Such is the decree of God. Lawful for you are women besides these if you seek them with your wealth for wedlock and not for debauchery. Then give those of these women you have enjoyed, the agreed dower. It will not be sinful if you agree to something (else) by mutual consent after having settled the dowry. God is certainly all knowing and all wise.
