BRUSSELS The European Union s core countries these days, besides the original six founders, are the 15 member states that make up the European Monetary Union. They have converging economies and coordinated monetary and fiscal policies.

20. Observers from the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute and the European Institute for Crime Prevention and Control reported on their current initiatives in the field.

The observer from the European Institute shared some preliminary findings from the European survey conducted in cooperation with the Ministry of the Interior of the Russian Federation.

The Institute is a member of the International Laser Ranging Service (ILRS) and the European Laser Ranging Service.

All information provided to the European Institute will be duly submitted to the Division once processed and analysed.

Finally, Europe should transform the ESM into a European Monetary Fund capable of providing policy assessment and advice, as well as financial assistance possibly drawing on European Commission staff.

The experience gained by UNICRI, the European Institute and the Asia and Far East Institute in developing and conducting training seminars could serve as a solid basis for further work.

The European Institute has been establishing a clearing house project on technical cooperation activities in eastern and central Europe.

The European Institute assisted the Council of Europe by commenting on the draft Code of Criminal Procedure of Latvia.

(b) Two fellowships for Remote Sensing Information Systems, tenable at the European Space Research Institute (ESRIN) in Frascati, Italy

The Institute finalized a project, funded by the European Commission, aimed at the coordination of and cooperation among national and European research programmes on security activities during major events.

According to the Rio de Janeiro Institute for Economy, in 2002, of the total number of people without access to monetary income, 80 were rural workingwomen.

The following intergovernmental and non governmental organizations were represented at the session Asian Development Bank, European Commission, Economic Cooperation Organization, Asian Institute of Transport Development, Asian Institute of Technology, Federation of ASEAN Shippers' Councils, GIF Research Foundation Japan and Infrastructure Development Institute.

As a result of its project on prison systems in central and eastern Europe, the European Institute has published a report on progress, problems and international standards in prison administration.Roy Walmsley, Prison Systems in Central and Eastern Europe, European Institute Publication Series No. 29 (Helsinki, 1996).

The fourth of the channels, the exchange rate, has already been functioning. The prospect of US monetary tightening coincides with moves by the European Central Bank and the Bank of Japan toward enhanced monetary stimulus.

But this reflects a deep misunderstanding of what monetary union means. Monetary union is possible only because of the substantial integration already achieved among European Union countries and sharing a single currency deepens that integration.

The project is being carried out by a group of five persons, including a staff member of the European Institute.

The project involves national institutional partners (mainly ministries of the interior) from 10 European Union countries and the European Police Office, with the Institute being entrusted with coordination and secretariat functions.
