In this regard, the Subcommittee urged the secretariat to assist member countries develop integrated land and water transport and develop an integrated intermodal transport network in the region.

These activities require cooperation with the private sector and intergovernmental organizations, in particular the regional commissions, the World Bank and the regional development banks particularly concerning issues of integrated transport planning, such as the development of national transport master plans or the conduct of corridor studies.

The Subcommittee attached great importance to long term strategies and guidance provided at the ministerial level that would facilitate the development of an integrated international intermodal transport system in the ESCAP region.

A second problem is the lack of an integrated approach to the gathering and sharing of information on trade and transport, which is at the core of trade facilitation in international supply chains.

The DESTIN study is aimed, inter alia, at developing a traffic forecasting model in order to identify priority projects for the development of a strategic integrated transport network in the Western Mediterranean region.

It also recognized ESCAP's initiative to develop an intergovernmental agreement on the Trans Asian Railway network as an important milestone for the development of an integrated, international intermodal transport network in the region.
