Military training advisers are primarily responsible for facilitating relations between the Border Patrol Unit and its Indonesian counterpart, while police training advisers provide training and mentoring to the Border Patrol Unit.

Similar visits have commenced to all district headquarters of the Border Patrol Unit.

Twenty training sessions were conducted in Dili and districts for PNTL staff and special units, including the Police Reserve Unit, the Rapid Intervention Unit, the Border Patrol Unit and the Vulnerable Persons Unit.

Although the UNMISET military component, in cooperation with UNMISET civilian police advisers, will continue to provide training to the Border Patrol Unit in the coming months, additional training will likely be required beyond May 2005 to enable the Border Patrol Unit to overcome its lack of experience, confidence and capacity to manage border affairs, relative to its Indonesian military counterparts.

On 21 April, however, the Border Patrol Unit exchanged gunfire with Indonesian military personnel, who were reportedly pursuing a group of smugglers at the Tactical Coordination Line.
