Likewise, women were elected to the posts of Rector of the University of the Autonomous Regions of the Caribbean Coast of Nicaragua (URACCAN) and Vice Rector of the National Autonomous University of Nicaragua.

The next Rector is expected to begin his or her term in September 1997.

In that context, the Rector of the University participated in the fall 1997 session of ACC.

On 31 March 1998, she filed a complaint with the Rector, claiming that his decision was illegal.

201. The Secretary General appointed Hans van Ginkel as the fourth Rector of the United Nations University.

The Rector also appointed Andrés Pastrana, a former mayor of Bogotá, as the first Director of UNU ILA.

224. The Rector convened two meetings of the Conference of Directors of UNU research and training centres and programmes.

4. At the 26th meeting, on 28 October, the Rector of the United Nations University made an introductory statement.

Professor Zhou Li Gao, Vice Rector of the University of Macau, was appointed a member of the Board of UNU IIST.

The Council also urged the Rector to continue his efforts to harmonize standards and procedures for electronic communication throughout the UNU system.

73. A member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences was appointed by the Rector as chair of the UNU ZERI Scientific Advisory Committee.

In that light, the Secretary General would recommend to ACC the participation of the Rector of the University in the relevant discussions in ACC.

227. The Rector addressed the plenary sessions in Copenhagen and Beijing and described in his statements the work of the University related to each Conference.

The report, together with the comments of the Rector, the Board and the new Director of UNU IIST, was submitted to the Council in December.

25. Regular informal substantive consultations are held between the Rector and the senior academic staff of the United Nations University and United Nations senior officials.

The Council also requested the Rector to study the publishing activities of UNU with the aim of improving the efficiency and cost effectiveness of the operations.

In September, the provincial authorities informed the Rector that, owing to severe budget cuts, they would be unable to honour the pledge of the previous Government.

All these forms of support are non repayable and the higher education institutions (i.e. the rector together with a students apos committee) decide about their allocation.
