This is the Etch A Sketch program the theme of EG 2008.

Can you sketch it for me on this piece of paper please?

You see, this is sort of a sketch I did on a napkin.

It is a very coarse sketch of how we migrated around the planet.

And I proposed that we cut through the mountain. That was my first sketch.

And if I could summarize that all up into one single sketch it would be this.

I take a piece of paper, I visualize my story, sometimes I sketch, sometimes I don't.

But, to my credit, I was so embarrassed about doing that that I never submitted this sketch.

Or might we actually occasionally be something like the selfless altruist depicted in Rembrandt's lovely, lovely sketch here?

There's always a different scenario that you can sketch out where it's possible that something could have been done differently.

And again, the humanistic sketch, the translation into the public space, but this very, very much a part of the ecology.

And then you have to do the initial sketch of the character, which is like your structure of a piece, and then you add pen and pencil and whatever details that you need that's polishing the drawing.

If you want to add to this picture and try and sketch it globally, you really have to force yourself to go down to the four corners of the Earth Africa, India, Antarctica, Australia and start putting together some of these pieces.

The first sketch recognizes that the building is many spaces spaces where research goes on, conference centers, a public building because it will be a museum devoted to peacemaking and these are the drawings that we submitted for the competition, the plans showing the spaces which radiate outwards from the entry.

So this iteration of the story is simultaneously nostalgic for the characters' '80s glory days for the '90s grunge era (around when the masterminds David Wain and Michael Showalter made the sketch comedy The State for MTV) and for itself that is, for 2001, before its stars, like Elizabeth Banks, Amy Poehler and Paul Rudd, went on to bigger things.

Who cares the banter is well rehearsed and the jokes come thin and fast, while Ivana hands out sketch maps of the day's excursion and we all pretend to be horrified by the wiggles, contour shading and a profile with ups and downs on it, although anything else would be a surprise on a Croatian bike ride that starts and finishes at sea level.

If one adds to this European sketch of global development the fact that, whatever the outcome of the US election, America will shift its strategic focus to East Asia (and otherwise mainly look after itself), nearly everything cries out for a robust EU foreign and security policy. Unfortunately, exactly the opposite is happening here, too, renationalization is uppermost in the minds of Europe s peoples and decision makers.

Or even the people who actually pulled it off, who just would sketch out these structures of what would eventually become a worldwide network, and sketching things on the back of napkins and on note papers and arguing over dinner at Howard Johnson's on Route 128 in Lexington, Massachusetts, just two miles from where I was studying the Queen's Gambit Deferred singing Midnight Train to Georgia, while in my dad's big easy chair, you know?

I give you this personal sketch because it is the best I can do to illustrate what care giving entails, and why it is so crucial to everyone s life and to the human condition more generally. Care giving, as illustrated by our case, includes what happens when hope and consolation are abandoned, when theodicy ends, and when all there is to do is to be present with the sufferer, sharing his or her suffering by simply and usually silently being there.
