The Summit adopted the Rome Declaration on World Food Security and the World Food Summit Plan of Action, in which a separate Objective was dedicated to the right to food.

A statement was also made by the Secretary General of the World Food Summit.

2. First, however, we would like to draw attention to the Rome Declaration on World Food Security and World Food Summit Plan of Action, adopted by the World Food Summit, which was held in Rome from 13 to 17 November 1996.

94. The development work carried out by the World Food Programme (WFP) is consistent with the assistance framework for poverty eradication elaborated in the World Summit for Social Development and other major United Nations conferences.

The State of Food Insecurity in the World. FAO, Rome.

The Group of 77 and China noted with satisfaction that FAO had convened a World Food Summit, to be held in Rome from 13 to 17 November 1996, in order to address the major challenge of achieving world food security.

6. Transformation of the Committee on Food Aid Policies and Programmes into the Executive Board of the World Food Programme.

37. In that connection, the Russian Federation welcomed the convening of the World Food Summit, and hoped that it would carry out a comprehensive analysis of all elements of food security and determine ways to eradicate the primary causes of hunger and food shortages in various areas of the world.

61. Participants in the World Food Summit had affirmed that poverty was a major cause of food insecurity and that poverty eradication was critical to improving access to food.
