United Nations Fisheries Conference

The United Nations contributed towards statutory and specialized meetings of IPU.

During the year, a number of meetings were held on SME development, and UNCTAD attended those meetings held in Geneva and Paris (ILO Annual Meeting, Committee of Donor Agencies for SME Development, OECD Conference on Women Entrepreneurs in Small and Medium Enterprises) UNCTAD also attended and presented a paper at the Tenth International Conference of Small and Medium Enterprises, Florida, sponsored by the World Association for Small and Medium Enterprises.

(e) World Rice Research Conference To help provide solutions to the many challenges facing the rice industry, the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries organized the World Rice Research Conference.

EFCT was also able to mark 15 years as a member of the Joint Meetings Industry Council (whose Chair it currently occupies), which brings together the top 13 professional organizations worldwide in the conference industry.

(a) Meetings with leaders of industry

The ILO employment and social protection sectors developed a joint proposal for the agenda of the ninety sixth session (2007) of the International Labour Conference on the theme Employment and social protection in ageing societies .

The Meeting brought together around 400 workers from the fishing, aquaculture and similar industries.

Meetings were held, in association with Successful Meetings magazine, New York, with leading professional association representatives.

9. The meeting also underscored the importance of UNCTAD apos s Trade Point Programme to enhance the capacity of small and medium sized enterprises to identify the opportunities of modern ways of trading based on telecommunications and to master the basic elements of electronic commerce.

Further consultations with the organic sector took place in the context of the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM) Conference on Organic Agriculture and Biodiversity and the IFOAM Organic Coffee Conference.

The First National Conference on Aquaculture and Fishing was held in November 2003.

10. The experts recommended that the importance of SME development be put on the global agenda and that UNCTAD should introduce the topic of SMEs in the General Assembly so that all Governments appreciate the contribution of SMEs and discuss ways to promote them.

The provisional agenda for the thirty third session, as amended, was adopted.
