There are regulations governing the collection and disposal of infectious wastes.

6.10.1 Biological products known to contain, or thought likely to contain, any infectious substances should meet the requirements for infectious substances.

The Basel Convention has identified ten processes that might be permitted for the purpose of destruction and irreversible transformation of the persistent organic pollutant content in wastes when applied in such a way as to ensure that the remaining wastes and releases do not exhibit the characteristics of persistent organic pollutants.

The Convention covers toxic and eco toxic, poisonous, explosive, corrosive, flammable, and infectious wastes.

Parties are obliged to develop strategies to identify, manage, and dispose of POPs wastes.

In the environment, biosensors may be deployed to detect the presence of pollutants in air, soil and water and to track their spread from source points, including factories, agricultural combines, waste disposal plants, etc.
