5. Expert Meeting on information technology

In that resolution, the General Assembly noted with appreciation the report of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) entitled Information and Communication Technology Development Indices,1 which served as an important contribution to the preparation of the World Summit on the Information Society, and invited UNCTAD to update its report, in collaboration with the information and communication technologies Task Force and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

It was to be hoped that the conclusions of the United Nations Information and Communication Technologies Task Force and the Task Force on Financial Mechanisms for Information and Communication Technologies would be made available in time to be considered during the second phase of the World Summit on the Information Society.

The World Summit on the Information Society should examine the question of information security more comprehensively than it had in the past.

The Council will remain in session pending receipt of that information.

Consolidating regional cooperation in order to build information societies was one of the main goals of the World Summit on the Information Society.

Taking note also of Economic and Social Council resolution 2003 56, in which the Council invited the Commission to interact closely with the Information and Communication Technologies Task Force to promote greater information exchange and coordination of activities in the field of information and communication technologies in order to contribute to the World Summit on the Information Society,

The leaders affirm the importance of ensuring that the Agreement to Establish the Arab Information and Communication Technology Organization comes into force before the second phase of the World Summit on the Information Society.

All new information and communication technology initiatives throughout the Secretariat are reviewed by the Project Review Committee, which recommends to the Information and Communication Technology Board whether or not such initiatives should be approved.

The Group holds a monthly thematic meeting to exchange views and information on security.

These closed door meetings represent a primary information source through information sharing and transfer of expertise.
