There have been improvements in the level of school enrolment, as well as a 30 per cent reduction in drop out rates.

The goal was to reduce maternal and infant mortality rates, increase the enrolment of girls at all educational levels and decrease the high dropout rate for girls.

While a significant campaign to increase primary school enrolment has raised the enrolment of girls to almost 40 per cent, compared to 67 per cent for boys, overall school enrolment among girls remains among the lowest in the world, with less than 10 per cent of girls enrolled in secondary school.

At present, almost 94.5 per cent of Vietnamese children are enrolled in primary schools, and the overall rate for girls is only a fraction of a percentage point less than that of boys.

However, it is concerned that enrolment and literacy levels are still low, particularly in secondary and pre primary education, and that there is a significant disparity between the number of boys and girls attending school.

However, school enrolment among Afghan girls remains among the lowest in the world, with less than 10 percent of girls enrolled in secondary school.

The drop out rate between grades one and six is also low.

Inequitable and low levels of access to education low enrolment rates for girls, and persistent disparities between girls and boys.

Several projects were funded in 2004 to increase girls' enrolment and retention in selected countries where the proportion of girls in school is still low.

Special attention should be given to addressing the high drop out and low enrolment rates of girls at secondary and tertiary levels.

There is a low failure rate between grades one and six because students are automatically promoted to the next grade.

Through free and universal education and health care, Cuba had achieved high levels of school attendance and a low rate of child mortality.

The proportion of girls going to school at right age is lower than that of boys and girl drop outs is higher than boys.

In Kuwait, there was a high literacy and school enrolment rate for girls and women, who represented more than 50 per cent of primary and secondary school enrolment, and more than 37 per cent of enrolment at the university level.

The enrolment rate is 98 per cent for men and 96 per cent for women for elementary education, 56.3 per cent for men and 57.5 per cent for women for secondary education, 18.4 per cent for men and 21.3 per cent for women in higher education.

The rate was highest in the Gaza Strip (48.1 pupils), which continued to experience large increases in enrolment, and lowest in the West Bank (37.6 pupils).

The Committee expresses its concern about the low rate of enrolment of girls in schools, preference for the education of boys and the high dropout rate of girls due to pregnancy and early and forced marriage.

As can be seen from the table below, the school retention rate for female indigenous students is higher than that for male students, although well below that for all non indigenous ones.

It is estimated that the failure rate will have dropped by 0.1 per cent to 11.9 per cent by the end of the 2003 2004 cycle, compared with the 2002 2003 cycle, and the drop out rate is expected to fall to two per cent.

Low income rates have also been on the decline for those groups more likely to experience low income.

The rate of annual enrolment in primary and secondary education is very low and not commensurate with the actual population of children, who constitute over half of the population of Sierra Leone.

Female illiteracy has been reduced to acceptable levels, and school dropout rates have declined.

Results usually show that child labour rates are higher among indigenous children and that, in turn, their school attendance rates are lower, especially among girls.

Primary education enrolment is over 91.5 per cent.

Considerable improvements have also been achieved in secondary enrolment rates.

(b) The drop out rate is considerably lower for girls than for boys.

School attendance is very high in Aruba up to age 15, attendance is well above 95 .

First, they were trapped in a vicious circle of low income, low savings and low investment, leading to low productivity and low growth.

The adult literacy rate was 68 per cent and primary school enrolment was 90 per cent.

In rural areas, in particular, enrollment includes 90 of boys and 80 of girls.

Enrolment in primary education is high in Sri Lanka.

The Committee notes with concern, however, the very low enrolment of children in pre school and primary school and the even lower enrolment in secondary school, in particular of girls.

The Government established a vocational training course for unemployed young people and also a girls' enrolment project, which aims to raise the enrolment rate of girls, reduce the repeat and drop out rates and raise the number of women teachers in the first stage of basic education.

It will be noted that in comparison with the 1989 90 school year the drop out rate is declining, especially among girls, and that the rate is lower for girls than for boys.

Gross enrolment in primary schools now averages 99 per cent.

The evaluation found that enrolment rates for women during the period of the strategy increased at a faster rate than for men.
