Product traceability to ensure information on the source of the product is also becoming an important issue that producers have to comply with in order to be able to enter regional or international markets.

A key question was whether discussions centred around distribution of benefits would take place only after there was a final product, or even prior to the development of a product.

Negotiations on EGs are bound to be different from other possible sectorial discussions in the NGMA, which require the reduction of tariffs in the same and proximate HS chapters.

What should be the focus of UNCTAD's future work on environmental goods and services (EGS)?

What remained was the need for cooperation among all the stakeholders in the international commodity markets, which varied enormously in terms of their economic, social and political problems, as well as in other ways, and must therefore be treated with the necessary degree of differentiation.

In particular, there are a growing number of standards on such issues as the efficiency of energy consuming products (such as electric motors and household appliances), the use in products of toxic or hazardous chemicals and materials, and the recyclability of products.
