Data from GLASOD and the SOTER and the World Overview of Conservation Approaches and Technologies (WOCAT) programmes will be used to produce a first updated global assessment.

The only available global assessment of soil degradation is the UNEP and ISRIC Global Assessment of Soil Degradation (GLASOD) study carried out during the 1980s at a scale of 1 5 million.

Using more recent material, readily available, the GLASOD study has been improved by LADA.

China has also contributed to improving the methodological framework by testing the VSA indicators for local assessment.

The results have been compiled in Arc Info format and a revised GLASOD map could now be produced by FAO.

These Visual Soil Assessment (VSA) indicators are morphological and measured soil characteristics that allow for the transfer of information between sites, soil types, land uses etc., while providing a cross check and physical reality to structure descriptors.
