Within the United Nations system, the Economic and Social Council, with its capacity for coordination of operational activities for development, must take the lead on development issues.

At its last session, the Board recommended that the secretariat be more proactive in identifying organizations in developing countries that could be eligible for funding.

The groundwork could be laid at a regional and subregional level prior to that conference.

We look forward to further progress being made during the current session of the General Assembly on this matter.
