Launch of the Urban Millennium Partnership

UN Habitat is engaged in two global campaigns the Global Campaign on Urban Governance and the Global Campaign for Secure Tenure.

Over the past four years, campaigns have been launched in 10 countries, and joint activities between the Urban Development Branch, responsible for the Global Campaign on Urban Governance, and the Shelter Branch, responsible for the Global Campaign for Secure Tenure, were conducted in five of them.

Moreover, four cities in Argentina had joined more than 900 others globally that advocated a world free of nuclear weapons.

Staff members involved in the Sustainable Cities Programme in the Urban Development Branch participated in the campaigns in the Philippines and Brazil.

For example, the urban governance norms provide the framework for designing operational activities and the regional offices provide input to the Urban Governance Section regarding the planning of the campaigns.

The movement of the rural poor to large cities is one of the exemplary narratives of the modern era. And governments, which typically focus on crude measures of economic performance, encourage rapid urbanization.
