While AIDS is the leading cause of death in Namibia today, and accounts for 26 of all reported cases (i.e. facility based) deaths in 1999, directly or directly AIDS is associated with some 61 of all recorded deaths in the country.

For the period 1984 1994, 107 AIDS cases in women were reported, representing 15.6 per cent of all cases.
