An environmental data centre has been established to collect data on air, water and soil pollution.

Environmental data and information

The data portal has become a unique collection of data and the authoritative source of data used by UNEP and its partners in the GEO reporting process and other integrated environment assessments.

UNEP, through its network of GRID centres, developed the GRID Meta data directory tool to provide both an electronic and hard copy catalogue of worldwide GRID data sources.

These databases are expected to be available by 1997 to be organized into an environmental database that will be developed and shared in an environmental information systems network.

Regional demonstrations of the GEO data portal are being prepared for developing regions in close cooperation with the central GEO data portal hosted by the European node of the UNEP Global Resources Information Database (GRID Geneva).
