Many children were displaced and homeless for various reasons, without anybody addressing their needs.

Millions have lost their homes and their parents, not to mention years of education and their youth.

The United States endorsed the overall direction of the report on the impact of armed conflict on children (A 51 306 and Add.1), which highlighted the particular vulnerabilities of children by describing the tragic plight of refugee and internally displaced children, children conscripted by armies or militias, or child victims of sexual exploitation.

This has been the case in residential boarding schools far away, where the speaking of the native language was forbidden, with sanctions varying from physical punishment to shame orphanages for children who did have families indentured child labour, etc.

The effects of poverty were seen in the rising incidence of child labour and of children who live or work on the street, alcoholism, domestic violence, sexually transmitted infections, tuberculosis, homelessness, trafficking in women and children, and suicide.

In the existing conditions, many children were rendered homeless and orphaned or their families were unable to provide basic necessities, thereby causing them to resort to other means of support.

While acknowledging the existence of a National Anti Poverty Strategy, the Committee is particularly concerned about the incidence of child poverty and homeless children in the State party and encourages it to strengthen measures and programmes for the protection of the rights of the most vulnerable children.
