This satellite was joined in orbit by its near twin, when ERS 2 was launched on 21 April 1995.

Satellite communication in Poland was limited to fixed satellite service operating in the Ku band and using the geostationary satellites of EUTELSAT, INTELSAT, Dividends from Space (DFS), Kopernikus and ORION F1.

The pre operational meteorological programme had begun in 1977 and included Meteosat 1, Meteosat 2 and Meteosat 3, while the operational programme included Meteosat 4, Meteosat 5 and Meteosat 6.

Successors to Astrid (2 and 3) are being planned.

Preliminary work is also beginning on RADARSAT II, the follow on satellite.

A new generation of satellites, SAC C and SAC D, aimed for scientific research and remote sensing, was being prepared for launching from 1999 to 2006.

The Earth Observation Centre receives and processes remote sensing data by means of satellites. It now receives and processes data from the Marine Observation Satellites 1 and 1b (MOS 1 1b) of Japan, the United States Land Remote Sensing Satellite (LANDSAT), the satellite système probatoire d apos observation de la terre (SPOT) (the French remote sensing satellite), the European Remote Sensing Satellite 1 (ERS 1) and the Japanese Earth Resource Satellite (JERS 1).

This is actually taken from the satellite that we have in orbit around Saturn, the Cassini.

The polar orbit satellite Tan Ce 2 and scientific experiment satellites such as the Shi Jian 6, A and B, satellites had been launched and the Shen Zhou VI manned spacecraft carrying two astronauts had successfully completed its five day flight.
