In 1991, with the infant death rate of 14,5 promil BiH fell under the category of countries with relatively low infant mortality rate (in Central and Eastern Europe, the infant mortality rate was 17,5 promils and the European average was 7,5 promils).

The neonatal or perinatal mortality rate is 30 per cent higher for boys than for girls.

The maternal mortality ratio, in particular, at 1,600 deaths per 100,000 live births, remains one of the highest in the world.

6. Infant mortality

The infant mortality rate is the highest on this continent and is about three times higher than the U.S. national average.

Our performance in infant mortality and maternal mortality has not been so good.

The infant mortality rate was only 17 per 1,000 live births, and Sri Lanka had achieved the Goal for maternal mortality rates also.

It noted further that the mortality assumptions included a modest projection of future decreases in mortality rates.
