Yet the role of leadership in populism is vastly overestimated. Indeed, given populism s importance as a political phenomenon, that view, along with two others that populism is somehow a call for direct democracy, and that populists can only protest, but never govern 160 needs to be challenged.

Rather, populism is a thoroughly moralized conception of politics, and a populist is a politician who claims that he or she and only he or she truly represents the people, thus relegating all political opponents to the role of iniquitous pretenders.

It is often said that populists cannot govern, or will be exposed as incompetent, when elected to office. According to this view, populist parties are essentially protest parties, and protest cannot govern, because it is impossible to protest against oneself.

After all, the success of Erdoğan s populist Justice and Development Party, as well as the increasing presence of religious symbols and customs in public life, is a result of more democracy in Turkey, not less.

They are politicizing what should be a purely humanitarian issue.

The key problem in the modern world was rising intolerance between different peoples, and in order for them to live together in harmony it was essential to combat populism, all forms of racism, xenophobia, nationalism and religious fundamentalism.

So, for all of you who saw that, you're a complete realist. All right?

Populist nationalists present themselves as the only defenders of national identity and sovereignty against external threats, as Polish Premier Jaroslaw Kaczynski put it. Their vision is a Christian Europe of sovereign nation states that opposes the existing materialist, decadent, permissive, and supra national model.

In such a scenario, self empowered minorities come to speak in the name of imaginary majorities a populism of sorts, and, like all populism, driven by emotions more than by norms, let alone reasons. Or it simply all ends in riots.

It's not violence and war, it's not race, it's not gender, it's not Marxism, it's not Nazism.

Populism cannot be understood at the level of policies rather, it is a particular way of imagining politics. It pits the innocent, always hard working people against both a corrupt elite (who do not really work, other than to further their own interests) and those on the very bottom of society (who also do not work and live off others).

Thus, calls for more popular participation are not essential to populism rather, they are a symptom of perceived exclusion (which might well be a reality, especially in Latin America). But cries for political inclusion are different from demands for direct democracy.

How could people and governments accept these enormous debts and even recommend further fiscal stimulus? In the 1920 s and 1930 s, Germany s traditional Christian values and culture had collapsed under the attack of two atheist ideologies communism and Nazism. Both destroyed the Weimar Republic, acting as a kind of evil twins who hated each other, yet shared a common hatred of Christianity and democracy.

And the Spanish are right in the middle of it.

New populist parties garner large numbers of votes simply by frightening people about the supposed horrors of Islam, or of clashing civilizations. For the populists, however, the real enemies perhaps even more nefarious than the immigrants themselves are the cosmopolitan elites who tolerate and even encourage these horrors.

Nevertheless, we cannot fail to note that, even after 60 years, the ghosts of Naziism and militarism still linger.

We rejected the tendency to equate asylum seekers with criminals, even terrorists, and deplored the harmful exploitation of this confusion by certain populist elements.
