Populist anti euro parties of the right and the left are challenging Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi. And Marine Le Pen of the far right National Front is polling well ahead of the 2017 French presidential election.

This is a serious problem for political parties on the left, which increasingly seem to be speaking for the metropolitan elites, while provincial populists are pushing traditional conservatives further to the right by fishing in the dark waters of popular resentment.

Socialism is on the rise again across Europe, at least in opinion polls. And right wing populism has become an electoral force to be reckoned with in France, Belgium, and the Netherlands.

A large number of local people gathered outside the venue of the conference to protest. They strongly opposed the far right populism advocated by the party.

Of course, when it comes to immigration and human rights, the internationalist ideological tradition of socialism prevents extreme nationalist and racist discourse on the far left. But, given that these parties are competing with the far right for the same disenchanted voters, their humanism on these issues has become a severe political handicap, which may explain why the extreme right has lately been more successful electorally.

Until 2010, Sweden seemed immune to the rise of far right parties like those in Denmark, Norway, and Finland. Since then, however, the SD has fundamentally changed the country s political landscape.

Neither party advocates violence, even if some of their rhetoric might inspire it. Voters for the far right may be motivated less by ideology than by anxieties and resentments that are felt in many European countries, including ones with no Nazi tradition, such as The Netherlands and Denmark.

Beppe Grillo s populist Five Star Movement emerged with 25 of the popular vote the highest support for any single party. Former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, confounding those who had forecast his political demise, re emerged at the head of a populist rightist coalition that ended up only 0.3 percentage points away from winning.

Throughout Europe, populist parties from the right wing United Kingdom Independence Party to the far left Syriza in Greece seek a return to the ostensibly simpler and happier times of national control and closed borders. In the US, a prominent strain of jurisprudence defends the original intent of the Constitution s framers, while Republicans are shifting toward isolationism and Democrats are denouncing free trade agreements.

Racism and extreme right wing activities existed and were gaining ground in Europe.

Right flank, march!

The phrase most often heard in Austria among voters of the right wing parties is fresh air. People say they voted for Haider and Strache to break the stranglehold of the ruling parties.

Some, such as France s National Front, oppose their country s eurozone membership others, such as Podemos in Spain, do not. Nonetheless, the challenge that these new parties pose to Europe could prove to be extremely disruptive.

That 29 is about 15 more than populist right wing parties get in very good years (for them) in other European countries. Strache, the leader of the Freedom Party, wants the government to create a new ministry to manage the deportation of immigrants.

There are at least four differences between center right and center left approaches to social and economic challenges. The right has greater confidence in markets to allocate resources and provide appropriate incentives favors private consumption over public goods is minimally concerned with economic inequality and tends to be more nationalistic and less optimistic about international cooperation.

This is certainly true in Latin America, where a wave of leftist populism has swept many countries. Several Europe countries, too, have revealed a less dramatic left right split, with Spain and Italy though not Poland and the Czech Republic moving somewhat to the left.

Right wing politics, especially when based on ethnic nationalism, are rarely good for minorities, who fare better in a more open, cosmopolitan environment. Jews were among the most ardent supporters of black Americans struggle for civil rights in the 1950 s and 1960 s.

This, then, is the modern Japanese version of populism the liberal elites, by falsifying the history of Japan s glorious war to liberate Asia, undermined the Japanese people s moral fiber. Because the ideological collapse of left wing politics in Japan has been as precipitous as in much of the Western world, the so called liberal elites have lost much of their former influence.

From the extreme right, National Front leader Marine Le Pen chides Merkel for the suffering that she is imposing on the peoples of Europe. From the opposite extreme, we have the Left Party s Jean Luc Mélenchon thundering against Merkel s austerity policy and inviting her to shut up.

The Dutch case is the most surprising, because, unlike Belgium, the Netherlands has no significant tradition of right wing populism. Nor does it share Switzerland s insularity.

But, though the Alliance certainly lost, the main opposition Swedish Social Democratic Party and its allies on the left did not win. In fact, the three leftist parties in Parliament gained a slightly smaller share of the popular vote than they did in the 2010 election.

One obstacle is anti migrant populism, which has intensified owing to the serious economic challenges that Europeans have faced. With far right political parties nipping at their heels, most mainstream politicians have avoided taking a stance on migration that might make them seem soft.

Yet the role of leadership in populism is vastly overestimated. Indeed, given populism s importance as a political phenomenon, that view, along with two others that populism is somehow a call for direct democracy, and that populists can only protest, but never govern 160 needs to be challenged.

At the same time, the main alternative candidates on the left and right have positioned themselves too far toward the extremes to recapture the center easily. On the left is Amir Peretz of the Labor party, a populist and trade union federation leader with little national leadership experience and even less familiarity with security matters.

On the other hand, a center right coalition between the Christian Democrats and the Free Democrats could spark the ECB into action.

Right wing politicians from the American South, together with Austrian, German, French, and Dutch populists, are accusing liberals of appeasing Islamofascism. These political heirs of deeply racist traditions are the new champions of a Jewish state, whose policies now owe more to nineteenth century ethnic chauvinism than to Zionism s socialist roots.

The Los Angeles Democrat asserted that the claims were being pedaled by ultra right wing pundits and websites.

In Denmark, the hard right Danish People s Party, with 25 parliamentary seats, is the country s third largest party. Dutch populists, such as Rita Verdonk or Geert Wilders, who is driven by a paranoid fear of Islamization, are putting the traditional political elites a combination of liberals, social democrats, and Christian democrats under severe pressure.

Not surprisingly, that change has fueled demands for more national sovereignty, which populist parties, such as Greece's newly elected Syriza, have translated into electoral success. All of these parties, whether on the right or the left, place national sovereignty at odds with the so called external powers, and seek to tilt the EU's political axis accordingly.
