The Japan Meteorological Agency conducts space based meteorological observations using GMS and meteorological rockets as part of the World Weather Watch programme of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).

As the ground facility to operate GMS, the Agency has the Meteorological Satellite Centre, which comprises the Data Processing Centre for image data processing and the Command and Data Acquisition Station for communication between the Data Processing Centre and GMS.

The infrastructure of WMO to support such an initiative comes from its scientific and technical programmes and its network of regional specialized meteorological centres, world meteorological centres and the national meteorological and hydrological services.

This application is part of the Regional Meteorological Telecommunication Network (RMTN), a cooperative effort of the United States National Weather Service and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).

It has 143 reference climate stations, 530 basic weather stations and 1,736 ordinary weather stations.

There are currently stations for receiving data from the METEOSAT meterological satellite, mainly in the National Department of Meteorology (DMN).

Under the WMO Education and Training Programme, the WMO Regional Meteorological Training Centre (RMTC) at Nanjing, China, is planning a one month International Training Course on Satellite Meteorology, in 1998, and WMO European Organization for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT) is planning a Regional Training Course on Satellite Meteorology at Niamey, in 1998.
