The jurisdiction of a subordinate court depends on its class and the rank of the presiding magistrate.

In particular, and in contrast to procedures in ordinary criminal courts, there is said to be no right to appeal before a higher tribunal.

Criminal jurisdiction also varies according to the class of magistrate presiding and class of court.

14. The Supreme People apos s Court is at the apex of the hierarchy of courts below it there are three local levels of higher, intermediate and basic level people apos s courts, and a number of special courts.

17. The Island Court, the Subordinate Court and the Supreme Court all have jurisdiction affecting human rights in certain areas arising from the laws in force in the Territory.

Magistrates preside over the decentralized lower courts.

Only the district court in Dili operates on a full time basis.
