The publications of the Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea aim primarily at the dissemination of information about the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, the comprehensive treaty dealing with all aspects of ocean affairs, as well as important developments and State practice with regard to the law of the sea.

(i) The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea

The State of Kuwait is fully committed to the issue of oceans and the law of the sea and acceded to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea in 1986 and to several other conventions, including, in 2002 the Agreement relating to the implementation of Part XI of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

430. The Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea participated in the group of experts and has been closely involved in the preparation of the draft convention, which is being undertaken jointly by UNESCO and the Division.

International cooperation is essential for the successful implementation of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

Since last year, the number of States parties to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) has risen from 145 to 149.

The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea recognizes the responsibility of coastal States for the sustainable management of living resources in their maritime zones.

Since its establishment in 1992, the Division of Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea has discharged effectively the responsibilities of the Secretary General under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

489. The expanded site of the Oceans and law of the sea is intended to be a gateway to educate the general public about the role of the Convention on the Law of the Sea in their daily lives.
